Understanding

What Is Havan?

Havan is a Vedic ceremony in which sacred mantras are recited and symbolic offerings are placed into a sacred fire. The fire represents light, purity, and transformation. The offerings express gratitude and remind us to let go of fear, anger, pride, and harmful thoughts.

For individuals, Havan offers time for prayer, reflection, and inner calm. For families, it creates a shared spiritual experience and helps pass important values to children. For the community, it builds friendship, belonging, and a commitment to the well-being of all.

You do not need previous knowledge or experience to attend. Members of the community will guide you through the ceremony.

Let us pray together and symbolically offer our fears, anger, pride, and negativity into the sacred fire.

About Arya Samaj

Vedic Wisdom for Modern Life

Arya Samaj is a worldwide Vedic movement founded by Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. “Arya Samaj” means a society of people who strive to be noble in their thoughts, words, and actions.

Arya Samaj believes in one formless God. It encourages people to seek truth, reject falsehood, increase knowledge, act fairly, and work for the good of all. Its teachings support equal dignity, education, personal responsibility, strong families, and service to humanity.

These values remain meaningful in Canadian society. They help us respect different backgrounds, preserve our heritage, strengthen families, and contribute as responsible neighbours and citizens.

Seek truth. Grow in knowledge. Treat everyone fairly. Work for the good of all.

These values connect us to our heritage while encouraging meaningful contributions to Canada’s diverse society.

Guiding Principles

The Ten Principles of Arya Samaj

These principles guide spiritual growth, ethical living, and service to society.

1

God is the primary source of all true knowledge and of everything known by knowledge.

2

God is existent, intelligent, and blissful. He is formless, all-powerful, just, merciful, unborn, endless, unchangeable, beginningless, unequalled, present everywhere, eternal, holy, and the creator of all. God alone is worthy of worship.

3

The Vedas are the scriptures of all true knowledge. Aryas should read them, teach them, recite them, and hear them being read.

4

One should always be ready to accept truth and renounce untruth.

5

All actions should follow Dharma and be taken after careful thought about right and wrong.

6

The main aim of Arya Samaj is to do good to the world by promoting the physical, spiritual, and social well-being of everyone.

7

Our conduct toward everyone should be guided by love, righteousness, and justice.

8

We should remove Avidya—ignorance—and promote Vidya—knowledge.

9

No one should seek only their own good. We should find our own progress in the progress of all.

10

We should follow social rules that promote the common good. In matters of personal welfare, everyone should be free.

Our Ottawa Story

Serving Ottawa for More Than Five Decades

Arya Samaj became an organized community in Ottawa around 1970. Its early members gathered to practise Havan Sandhya and follow the Vedic way of life. Over the years, families continued the monthly Havan tradition and supported Vedic ceremonies, prayer, learning, and community fellowship.

Today, Arya Samaj of Ottawa continues this tradition by welcoming established members, new families, younger generations, and anyone interested in learning about Vedic values.
